If your Austin pool deck has started cracking, fading, or turning into a hot plate every afternoon, you don’t need to tear it out and repour it. Pool deck resurfacing replaces worn, damaged, or slippery concrete with a new slip-resistant SUNDEK coating system — at a fraction of the cost and downtime of full replacement. Here’s what Austin homeowners actually pay, how the process works from first call to final walkthrough, what to expect once a crew is on-site, and how to tell whether your deck is a good candidate for resurfacing or needs repair work first.

Signs Your Austin Pool Deck Needs Resurfacing
Central Texas is hard on pool decks. Expansive clay soil shifts with every wet-dry cycle, and a bare concrete deck can climb well past 150°F in full summer sun. Common signs it’s time to resurface:
- Hairline cracking, especially near expansion joints or the pool’s edge
- A surface that’s gone rough, pitted, or chalky underfoot
- A deck that’s uncomfortably hot to walk on barefoot, even in partial shade
- Slipperiness when wet, particularly around ladders, steps, and splash zones
- Fading, staining, or discoloration from pool chemicals and UV exposure
- Flaking or peeling on a deck that’s already been coated once before
Most of these are surface-level issues that resurfacing corrects directly. If your deck also has settlement, heaving, or a section that’s visibly sunk, that’s a structural issue we address as concrete repair before any coating goes down — not something a coating alone should cover up.
How Much Does Pool Deck Resurfacing Cost in Austin, TX?
Every deck gets quoted after an on-site evaluation, not off a generic price list — but here’s the range Austin homeowners typically see, by system:
- SunSplash spray texture: $3–$6 per sq ft installed
- Classic Texture with color coat: $5–$8 per sq ft installed
- Decorative or stamped overlay finishes: $8–$15+ per sq ft
- Typical Austin residential pool deck (300–600 sq ft): $1,500–$5,000 total
Crack filling, spalling repair, and other surface repairs are scoped and priced separately, based on what’s found during the estimate. The Pool Deck Resurfacing Process, Step by Step
- Free on-site evaluation — we assess crack severity, surface condition, and drainage the same day, and recommend a system based on your deck and how it’s used.
- Repairs first — any cracking, spalling, or surface damage gets fixed before coating goes down. Skipping this step is the #1 reason a coating fails early.
- Surface preparation — pressure washing and, where needed, mechanical prep to open the concrete and strip anything that would block adhesion.
- Coating application — two passes of the chosen system (Classic Texture, SunSplash, SunSand, or SunPlay) in your selected color.
- Cure and walkthrough — 24–48 hours before foot traffic, 72+ hours before furniture or pool equipment goes back. We inspect the finished deck with you before we leave.
Most residential projects in Austin run 2–4 days start to finish. See the full process breakdown and FAQs, for more detail on each step.
What to Expect During the Project
Unlike a full tear-out and repour — which typically means a 3–4 week concrete cure before the deck is usable again — resurfacing keeps the disruption short. A few things to plan around:
- The deck itself is off-limits during application and cure, but the pool doesn’t need to be drained and can often stay open
- Keep kids and pets off the surface until the cure window has passed
- On summer projects, we schedule early-morning starts to work around Austin heat
- You’ll get a walkthrough of care and maintenance — cleaners to use, what to avoid, and roughly when to expect a recoat
A properly installed and maintained SUNDEK coating typically lasts 7–12 years before it needs refreshing. The concrete slab underneath isn’t going anywhere — it’s the surface finish that eventually wears.

Choosing the Right Coating System
Classic Texture is our most requested residential system — a spray-and-trowel finish that’s smooth underfoot and highly slip-resistant. SunSplash applies faster and works well for HOA and commercial pools. SunSand builds in extra grip around steps and splash zones, and SunPlay is a soft safety surfacing for decks with heavy kid or splash-pad use. See the full systems comparison for slip resistance, heat performance, and cost by system.

Pool Deck Resurfacing FAQs
Is pool deck resurfacing worth it compared to full replacement?
In almost every case, yes. Resurfacing costs a fraction of a full tear-out and repour, finishes in days instead of weeks, and looks the same as a new pour when done correctly. Replacement really only makes sense when the slab itself has structural damage — heaving, base failure, or deep settlement — rather than surface wear.
Can I resurface a pool deck myself?
We don’t recommend it. Adhesion depends on correct surface prep, primer use where needed, and application technique — skipping any of these is the most common reason a DIY or improperly installed coating peels or fails within a year or two. A professionally installed SUNDEK system is built to last 7–12 years.
Will resurfacing fix an uneven or sunken section of my pool deck?
Resurfacing corrects surface texture, color, and slip resistance — it won’t correct significant settlement or an uneven slab on its own. We flag this during the free evaluation, and if leveling or repair work is needed first, we handle it as part of the same project. Learn more about our concrete repair process.
